After six months of requests, the Bristol Bad Club finally screened The Room.
My life is separated into two time periods. My life before I saw The Room and my life after I saw The Room.
The first time I watched Tommy Wiseau’s magnus opus, I was changed forever.
I no longer looked at cinema the same way again and sought out every book, article and review about how it was made, in order to make some sense of what I had witnessed.
The Room inspired me to set up our cult film club and on the 20th February, to an audience of over 230 people (many of whom had never seen the film before), we unleashed it upon the people of Bristol.
We pulled out all the stops. We rented our biggest venue yet, Tim prepared a full-on audio/visual presentation and we both donned tuxes. We also did a raffle for some memorabilia that we had acquired from when we met Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero in person.
That’s right. We met the stars of the film and they were kind enough to record an intro for us.
The reaction to that, and the film, was everything we had hoped for.
Screams of ‘what the fuck am I watching?’ and audience members holding their heads in disbelief brought back memories of my first screening.
Dotted amongst the Wiseau-virgins were veteran viewers who were quoting lines, pointing out the assorted continuity errors and, of course, hurling spoons.
All in all, the night exceeded expectations and hopefully, next month’s screening, ‘dwarfploitation-Bond-rip-off’ For Y’ur Height Only will be just as popular.
Thanks again to Bristol Cathedral Choir School for hosting us, putting on food and indulging the waves of plastic spoons flying through the air.
We hope to see you all next month.
